Associate Professor Dr Cindy Mak, head of departent, breast surgery, at Chris O-Brien Lifehouse, says she and her colleagues have noticed a "significant drop in the number of women presenting with detected breast cancer".
"What we saw as breast surgeons is the kind of cancers coming in are bad ones," she says. "We also noticed last year there were lots of people trying to play catch-up, which is stressful for doctors and patients.”
"Some women felt really guilty that they didn't come earlier but they were scared. This year it will be much worse - BreastScreen has been closed for longer.”

“Today I am thrilled to be joined by a total boss lady, Dr Cindy Mak. Cindy is my breast surgeon, and has been an instrumental part of my breast cancer journey. Now when I say she’s a total boss I mean it – she is the head of department for Breast Surgery at the Chris O’Brien Lifehouse here in Sydney, she’s part of the team at The Mater, she works closely with the Sydney Breast Cancer Foundation to raise valuable funds for patient care, medical equipment and education and uses her voice where it counts to speak about women’s health and breast cancer alike.”
